Carbon Steel Instrumentation Valves

Carbon Steel Instrumentation Valves • ASTM A216 / A694 / A105 • Ball, Needle, Check & Manifold Valves

Carbon Steel Instrumentation Valves Manufacturer in India

Ganpat Metal Pvt. Ltd. handles Carbon Steel Instrumentation Valves requirements for industrial process lines, pressure measurement systems, fluid control equipment and plant instrumentation. Carbon steel valves are selected for their material strength, pressure-containing design and compatibility with the operating medium and service conditions.

Carbon Steel Instrumentation Valves

The product specification can include ASTM A216 cast carbon steel and ASTM A694 forged carbon or alloy steel, depending on the valve construction and required service. These standards cover different product forms and must be matched to the specified valve design.

For forged carbon steel requirements under ASTM A105, see our A105 Instrumentation Valves page.

Material selection: ASTM A216 covers carbon steel castings for valves and other pressure-containing parts. ASTM A694 covers carbon and alloy steel forgings for high-pressure transmission service. The grade must be specified alongside the standard because chemical composition and mechanical properties differ between grades.

Chemical Composition of Carbon Steel Valve Materials

Chemical composition depends on the specified grade. The following table gives the principal composition limits for ASTM A216 Grade WCB cast carbon steel. ASTM A694 forgings have grade-specific chemical requirements and should not be inferred from the WCB casting table.

Element ASTM A216 Grade WCB
Carbon (C), max. 0.30%
Manganese (Mn), max. 1.00%
Silicon (Si), max. 0.60%
Phosphorus (P), max. 0.040%
Sulfur (S), max. 0.045%

Mechanical Properties of Carbon Steel Valves

The following are the principal tensile requirements for ASTM A216 Grade WCB cast carbon steel. Mechanical requirements for ASTM A694 depend on the selected F-grade.

Mechanical Property ASTM A216 Grade WCB
Tensile Strength, min. 70,000 psi (485 MPa)
Yield Strength, min. 36,000 psi (250 MPa)
Elongation in 2 in. (50 mm), min. 22%

For example, ASTM A694 F52 specifies a minimum yield strength of 52 ksi (360 MPa), a minimum tensile strength of 66 ksi (455 MPa) and a minimum elongation of 20%. The material grade, product form and heat-treatment condition must match the purchase specification.

Equivalent Grades of Carbon Steel Valves

The equivalent-grade designation depends on the material specification and product form. The following table identifies the commonly used designations for ASTM A105 forged carbon steel.

Standard Grade / Designation UNS Werkstoff Number
ASTM / ASME A105 / SA105 K03504 1.0460

UNS K03504 and Werkstoff No. 1.0460 are commonly associated with ASTM A105 carbon steel forgings. They should not be used as universal equivalents for ASTM A216 castings or all ASTM A694 grades. For ASTM A216 cast valves, specify the required casting grade (e.g. WCB). For ASTM A694 forgings, identify the required F-grade designation.

Carbon Steel Instrument Valve Connections and Pressure Ratings

Connection Type Description
NPT National Pipe Taper thread
BSPT British Standard Pipe Taper thread
Screwed Parallel Parallel-threaded connection
Screwed Taper Taper-threaded connection
Socket Weld Welded connection for compatible pipe and valve designs
Flanged End Flanged connection defined by the applicable dimensional standard

NPT, BSPT and parallel-thread connections have different geometries. The enquiry should identify the exact thread designation, connection size and male or female arrangement.

Pressure Classes

ASME Pressure Class Designation
Class 150 150
Class 300 300
Class 600 600
Class 900 900
Class 1500 1500
Class 2500 2500

These are nominal ASME pressure-class designations, not direct working-pressure values in psi. The allowable working pressure depends on the valve design, material group and operating temperature under the applicable standard.

For quotation accuracy, provide the material standard/grade, valve type, size, pressure class, end connection, quantity and any inspection requirements. These details determine the applicable manufacturing and documentation requirements.

Carbon Steel Instrument Valve Standards, Testing and Documentation

  • ASTM A216 / ASME SA-216
  • ASTM A694 / ASME SA-694
  • ASTM A105 / ASME SA-105
  • API 598 / BS EN 12266-1
  • ASME B16.10 / B16.5 / B16.25 / B16.34
  • API 600 / BS 1414

Inspection requirements should address both the material supplied and the completed valve. Typical documentation includes chemical composition analysis, tensile and yield strength testing, Material Test Certificate, heat-treatment records where required, dimensional and visual inspection, pressure testing, seat-leakage testing, non-destructive examination when specified, material traceability records and third-party inspection report when required.

Applications of Carbon Steel Instrumentation Valves

  • Oil and gas process instrumentation
  • Petrochemical installations
  • Refinery process lines
  • Industrial pressure measurement systems
  • Steam and utility systems
  • Power generation equipment
  • Process sampling and instrument isolation
  • Industrial fluid handling
  • General process control systems
  • Pressure gauge and transmitter connections

The material grade should be selected according to the process medium, operating pressure, temperature and relevant piping or equipment specification. Carbon steel is not suitable for every corrosive medium, so the material selection must account for the actual service conditions.
